Incoming First-Year Students

All undergraduate, first-year students are required to live in University Housing during their first year of enrollment. As such, University Housing will reserve an on-campus space for all undergraduate, first-year students for their first year of enrollment.

Housing registration

Housing registration takes place in The Dawg House, our online student housing portal. There is a non-refundable fee for registration.

  • Registration is not complete until the fee is paid
  • Registration does not commit you to the University of Georgia

For most students, the opportunity to choose a space is determined by the date they register for housing and pay the non-refundable fee.

Steps to registration

STUDY UP: Check your email for a confirmation of your online registration, then research halls on the EXPLORE OPTIONS page. There, you’ll find links to rates, amenities, maps, 360-degree images, photos, room plans and videos to help you decide on your ideal on-campus space.
CREATE OR JOIN: Create or join a roommate group to assign a roommate to your space during room selection.
WAIT FOR IT: If you have paid the university’s commitment deposit, all email communication will go to your UGA email. After the university’s commitment deadline, University Housing will issue you an online appointment time to choose a space.*
CHOOSE: During your online appointment time, browse through available spaces in The Dawg House and make a selection. At this time, if you have selected a roommate option, you may pull a roommate into your space with you.**
MAKE IT OFFICIAL: Execute your housing contract in The Dawg House by the deadline. If you fail to execute a contract, you may lose your assigned space.

* Although most students will self-select a space, some will be assigned automatically. In that event, every attempt will be made to honor roommate groups where space is available.

** Roommate designation in The Dawg House is available for fall admits only

Other important information

Most residence halls close during holiday breaks. If you require housing during these breaks, choose a hall that stays open.
Morehead Honors College first-year students have priority in choosing Myers Hall. Living in Myers Hall is not a requirement of the Morehead Honors College. Honors participants should expect to have an honors roommate.
Some residence halls in the East Campus Village Community have contracts requiring fee payments in fall, spring and summer.

Students wishing to request an exemption from the live-on requirement must make a formal request through The Dawg House. To give ample time for review, requests must be received no later than the deadline below for each semester:

  • May 1 for summer session first enrollment
  • May 15 for fall semester first enrollment
  • Nov 1 for spring semester first enrollment.

Students must indicate their reason for requesting the exemption, which may only be one of the following:

  • the student will, for the entirety of the student’s first year of enrollment, reside in the principal residence of a parent or legal guardian within the Georgia counties of Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oglethorpe or Oconee;
  • the student will be under the age of 17 by the University’s first official day of classes for the student’s first semester of enrollment;
  • the student will reach the age of 21 prior to the University’s first official day of classes for the student’s first semester of enrollment; or
  • the student may request an exemption on the basis of compelling individual circumstance to be considered by University Housing.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay the UGA commitment deposit to register for housing?

No. However, you must pay your UGA commitment deposit by the commitment deadline in order to receive an appointment time to choose a space. Registering for housing does not commit you to UGA, it only puts you in line for selecting the space of your choice.

Is it a guarantee that I will get to choose my own space?

Although most students receive appointment times to choose, some students will be assigned a space. This could be due to a variety of reasons (e.g., a roommate pulls you into a space; you are participating in a special program; you have a later housing registration date).

Am I signing a contract when I register?

No. When you register for housing, you will pay a non-refundable registration fee. You will sign/execute your contract after you choose your space or receive your assignment.

Can I choose my roommate? What if I don’t know anybody?

For fall enrollment, roommate search and selection open once you complete your housing registration.

I live close to UGA, do I have to live on campus?

Although living on campus is a requirement for your first year, students living in Clarke County and the surrounding counties can file for an exemption to the requirement by logging onto The Dawg House to begin the registration process. After you verify your contact information, choose to request an exemption. Find out more about exemptions above and by viewing the First-Year Live-On Requirement.

Where can I live?

Take some time to Explore Options. From there, you’ll have access to rates, amenities, maps, 360-degree images, photos, room plans and videos to help you decide on your ideal on-campus space. You’ll also find information about partnership programs that integrate academics and residence life such as language communities, the Entrepreneurship Living Learning Community and Franklin Residential College. Also, don’t forget to follow us on social media to see what to expect, including UGA Housing on YouTube, in which residents document their on-campus experiences.

Searching for and adding roommates

More information…

Students admitted for fall may use the roommate search tool in The Dawg House. This option allows you to search for potential roommates by creating a profile, and to create or join a roommate group. Each group member has the authority to assign other group member to available spaces. If you have a preferred roommate, make sure to create or join a roommate group before your room selection appointment.

Searching for roommates in The Dawg House:

To search for a roommate or designate someone you already know as a roommate, start by creating or joining a roommate group.

Create a roommate group if…
You want to search for other students by their profile name or if you want to search for other students by answers to the roommate profile questions.

Groups can be comprised of up to two students of the same gender and class standing (for example, all students in a group must be first-year students.) Most of our spaces only house two students. If you start a group but do not add anybody to it, you may still continue through the room selection process as a group of one.

Join a roommate group if…
You already know the group name for your desired roommate.

You can only be in one group at a time. If you join a group after already being in another group, you will be removed from the original group. Group members in the original group will remain in the group.

Do not create or join a roommate group if…
You do not want to search for or designate roommates.

When you choose a space, your roommate/s will be whoever else chooses the remaining spaces in that unit (first-year student/s with the same designated gender as you). After you and your roommate have signed your contracts, their name will automatically show up under “My Details” in The Dawg House using your UGA MyID and password.

For current residents, as long as you register by Jan. 28 at 8 a.m., the date and time you register do not matter.

Registration alone does not commit you to living on campus for the 2026-2027 academic year, nor does it guarantee you a space.

SAME SPACE OPTION

Current residents with eligible spaces in University Village, University Village East, Brown, Busbee, McWhorter, Rooker and Vandiver have the option to keep their spring 2026 space if they register by 8 a.m. Jan. 28, 2026.

REGISTER Jan. 26 at 7 p.m.

Am I eligible to participate in the room sign-up process?

All current students are eligible to register for room sign up, but priority to choose is given to current on-campus residents if they register to participate by 8 a.m. on Jan. 28.

Will all students who register be guaranteed a space?

Because of our commitment to the first-year student live-on requirement, we anticipate there will not be enough spaces for all returning students who wish to live on campus. Spaces are limited and not guaranteed, although spaces will continue to become available throughout the spring and summer due to cancellations.

When does registration open?

Take some time to Explore Options. Registration opens Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026 at 9 a.m.. On Jan. 28 at 8 a.m., the priority registration period ends, and University Housing will randomly generate round one of appointment times from the on-campus registrant pool. Registration remains open for both on-and off-campus residents.

Does registering early improve my chances of getting a space?

On-campus residents who register anytime during the priority registration period (Jan. 13 at 8 a.m. through Jan. 28 at 8 a.m.) have priority over everyone else for appointment times. Within the priority registration period, it does not matter when you register because appointment times will be randomly generated from the pool of priority registrants.

What happens after I register?

On-campus students who register during the priority registration period (Jan. 13 at 8 a.m. through Jan. 28 at 8 a.m.) may be randomly selected for an appointment time. These students will be notified via email Jan. 28 whether they are selected for the first round of room selection or are in consideration for later rounds.

Can I keep my current (spring semester) room?

If you have a housing contract for spring 2026 for Busbee, McWhorter, Rooker, Vandiver, University Village, UV East or Brown Hall, you may keep your same space if you register during the priority registration period (Jan. 13 at 9 a.m. through Jan. 28 at 8 a.m.). Not all spaces in these communities are eligible for room sign up. To see if your space is eligible, log onto The Dawg House during the priority registration period.

APPOINTMENT TIMES

When do appointment times begin?

Appointment times begin Monday, Feb. 2, 2026, and continue until spaces are filled. Round one prioritizes on-campus students who registered during the priority registration period (Jan. 13 at 8 a.m. through Jan. 28 at 8 a.m.); if later rounds occur, they may include remaining registrants who do not yet have a space.

How are appointment times assigned?

First-round appointment times will be randomly generated for a certain number of on campus registrants on Jan. 28. Not all on-campus students who register by 8 a.m. on Jan. 28 will get an appointment time in round one. Our database (StarRez) will pull from the pool of on-campus residents who registered during the priority registration period to randomly assign appointment times. Rounds will continue for the priority registration period pool until all registrants have had a chance to select a space or no more spaces are available—whichever comes first. At that time, the site will open for anyone who registered after 8 a.m. on Jan. 28 to select, either from remaining spaces or as spaces become available during cancellations.

How many rounds of room selection will there be?

This depends on:

  • how many vacant spaces we have for fall
  • how many registrations there are
  • how many randomly chosen students pull in a roommate with them
Rounds of appointment times will continue until all spaces have been filled. Once all spaces are filled, anyone who has registered may log in at any time to search for and choose a space as they shift. Spaces will become available through August 15 as people change rooms, cancel contracts or fail to execute a contract.

How many people will be in each round?

For the first round, this depends on how many registrations there are and how many spaces are available. For subsequent rounds, it depends on how many spaces remain.

I registered by 8 a.m. Jan. 28—why did I not get a first-round appointment time?

The first few rounds will prioritize on-campus students who registered during the priority registration period. Appointment times for this group are assigned randomly. Rounds will continue until spaces are filled, or until we run out of registrants. At that time, University Housing will email remaining registrants and let them know they may log in at any time to search for and choose a space. Spaces will become available through August as people change rooms, cancel contracts or fail to execute a contract.

ROOMMATES

How do I pull a roommate into my same room?

You cannot pull in a roommate during same room selection—it is for securing your own space. If you have a verified roommate group in The Dawg House, either roommate can pull the other into a space during a room selection appointment time, after same room sign-up has occurred.

Can I select a room with my roommate?

To search for a roommate or designate someone you already know as a roommate, create or join a roommate group. Both roommates must be registered for room sign up, and either roommate can use their appointment time to select a space for the other.

  • Create a roommate group if…
You want to search for other students by their profile name or if you want to search for other students by answers to the roommate profile questions
    • Groups can be comprised of up to two students of the same gender. If you start a group but do not add anybody to it, you will still be able to continue through the room selection process as a group of one.
  • Join a roommate group if…
You already know the group name and password for your desired roommate group
    • You can only be in one group at a time. If you join a group after already being in another group, you will be removed from your original group. Group members in the original group will remain even if you leave.
  • Do not create or join a roommate group if…
You do not want to search for or designate a roommate

I was already in a roommate group for housing selection. Do I need to create a new group?

Yes. All previous groups have been dissolved. Create or join a new roommate group if you wish to choose a space with a roommate.

What if my roommate did not register before my appointment time?

Both roommates must register for the process and be in a verified roommate group by the time one of you logs in to choose a space during the appointment time.

What if there are no spaces for both me and my roommate when I have the opportunity to choose?

Decide with your roommate in advance what your strategy is. You can:

  • Choose from what is available and request a room change after completing your housing contract. Choosing different rooms in the same building will give you the greatest chance of receiving a room change to be together
  • Continue to check over the next several months as spaces shift
  • Walk away from the process with no fees or obligations (if you have not executed a housing contract).

I’m searching for my roommate in The Dawg House but I can’t find them. Why don’t they show up?

Both roommates must be registered for room sign up. In addition, make sure both of you have clicked the “show in searches” box at the bottom of the profile page.

How do I know I will be assigned with my chosen roommate if they have a later appointment time than I do?

Being in a roommate group allows both roommates to assign each other to a space during appointment times. If you find any room with an empty space, you may reserve it for your roommate and vice-versa.

How do I know if my roommate chose a space for me?

Both roommates will receive a contract via email. If you’re not sure, you can always check your status in The Dawg House.

What if I want an off-campus student as my roommate?

As long as both students are registered for room sign up and are in a confirmed roommate group, roommates can assign each other to a space during their appointment times. If you find any room with an empty space, you may reserve it for your roommate and vice-versa.

What if I want an incoming first-year student as a roommate?

Incoming first-year students (summer or fall 2026) are ineligible for the room sign-up process. First-year students have a separate process based on their classification. If there is a unique circumstance for consideration, please contact the Housing Assignments Office at 706-542-1421 or via email at housing@uga.edu.

What if I miss the registration deadline?

There is no true deadline to register, just a date on which we will begin generating appointment times from the registrant pool. Current on-campus students who register after the priority registration period will not be considered for the first round of room selection and will not have the option to select their current space (if eligible). But they may still be able to view and select a space later in the process.

CHOOSING HOUSING

What happens if all spaces are filled before I receive an appointment time?

Once all spaces are filled, the site will remain open for registered students to log on at any time to search for and choose a space as they shift. Spaces will become available through August as people change rooms, cancel contracts or fail to execute a contract.

What if I don’t want any of the available options I see during my appointment time?

Decide in advance what your plan is for moving forward. You can:

  • Choose from what is available and request a room change after completing your housing contract
  • Continue to check over the next several months as spaces shift
  • Walk away from the process with no fees and no obligations (if you have not executed a housing contract)

How can I request a room change?

Students with completed housing contracts may request a room change in The Dawg House at any time.

When will I receive notification of a room change?

University Housing will begin offering room changes for fall 2026 as spaces become available through August as people change rooms, cancel contracts or fail to execute a contract. Room changes are offered on a rolling basis in the order in which the request was made as space becomes available.

What if I have a disability or need accommodation?

Students requesting new accommodations should contact Accessibility and Testing as early as possible to ensure their needs are considered during the process. Current on-campus students with existing accommodations should register during the priority consideration period. If your current space is eligible, you can choose it. If not, you will be placed in the pool of students for a randomly generated appointment time. If you receive an appointment time, University Housing will contact you with options that meet your accommodation during that week.

Will there be a waitlist?

No. Once all spaces are filled, anyone who has registered may log in at any time to search for and choose a space as they shift. Spaces will become available through August as people change rooms, cancel contracts or fail to execute a contract.

How do I get a single room?

If you are already in a single room in an eligible building, you may secure your current space. All other single rooms are first-come, first-serve during the appointment process. Most single rooms are in Payne and Building 1516, but private bedrooms are available in many halls, including the East Campus Village apartments, Soule, Reed and Myers Hall.

I’m graduating mid-year. How do I know I won’t be charged for spring semester?

Call or visit us by the contract cancellation deadline (usually mid-November for fall graduation) to let us know. We want you to graduate—there is no cancellation fee if you notify us by the deadline. The same date applies to spring study abroad opportunities.

What if I miss my appointment time?

If you do not select a space by the time your appointment time expires, you will not be offered another appointment time, but you may log in to choose from available spaces once appointment times have concluded and the site is left open.

How do I know if I’ve secured my space?

Once you’ve completed the room selection, you can access your assignment on The Dawg House under the “My Details” tab. You will receive an email by the end of the week of your appointment time with your housing contract and deadline to execute it. We’ll hold your space until you execute the contract to secure it. Once the deadline to execute the contract has passed, the space will become open for other students to select.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay the UGA commitment deposit to register for housing?

No. However, you must pay your UGA commitment deposit by the May 1 deadline in order to receive an appointment time to choose a space. Registering for housing does not commit you to UGA, it only puts you in line for selecting the space of your choice.

Am I signing a contract when I register?

No. When you register for housing, you will pay a non-refundable registration fee. You will sign/execute your contract in the summer after you choose your building and room assignment.

Can I choose my roommate?

It depends. If you already have somebody in mind, you will have the option of adding them to your roommate group in The Dawg House and selecting them during your appointment time to choose a space IF there are two spots available in the space you choose.
